Llandudno Pier
BAITS
Black lug or blow lug tipped with crab or mussel picks out the codling and coalies, or tip the worm with mackerel or squid to target the bigger whiting. Fish baits, mackerel, herring or a small fresh rockling or whiting is best for the conger, with mackerel strips finding the dogfish. A black lug bait tipped with razor fish can also find a few better flounder in the February period
TACKLE AND TACTICS
Use a 5-6oz beach caster or a strong 4-10oz Uptider and a reel line of 25 or 30lbs to give you the option to lift middle sized fish. Bigger fish need a drop net. Most anglers make for the end of the pier, but there are mussel beds casting from the right hand side which often carry the better fishing. This mussel bed ground is especially good for coalies, codling, conger and dogfish. Drop shorter for the flounder, with the whiting fairly evenly scattered.
Reliable rigs are a three-hook rig with size 1 Aberdeen hooks for general fishing, or switch to a two-hook rig with size 2/0 hooks for the codling and coalies. Pulley rigs and 4/0 hooks work best for the conger. Its best to fish a simple weak link system to the lead as the ground can be snaggy.
Regular anglers like the two hours either side of high water best, but the ebb can also produce well but fishing can be done on any state of the tide especially for the codling and doggies. February and March can see the odd thornback ray taken casting way out off the end of the pier with sand eel or mackerel baits.
