The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry on the Isle of Man is developing a charter angling, with a view to encouraging local vessel owners to consider the provision of charter angling trips as a realistic business opportunity.
This coincides with the Department of Tourism & Leisure’s initiative to promote marine tourism and, as such, the two Departments are working closely together to explore potential opportunities for the Island.
Together, DAFF and DTL are looking to provide practical support to the existing charter angling businesses on the Island and to encourage others who may be interested in setting one up.
Minister for Agriculture Phil Gawne MHK said: “The Island has a unique marine environment which presents great opportunities for recreational sea angling.
The Isle of Man could potentially be the prime sea angling centre in the British Isles and I would like to offer the Department’s support to fishing vessel owners who are interested in this as an alternative means of income.”
DAFF has organised a workshop open to all vessel owners, both recreational and those from the commercial fishing industry, who are interested in the possibility of extending the use of their vessel to provide charter angling trips.
Speakers from the two Departments, along with representatives from the Department of Transport, will each provide a short presentation on practical issues such as how to qualify to take passengers and how to upgrade your vessel if necessary.
Advice will also be given on the types of practical assistance that may be offered in the form of grants, as well as details of the training course available on the responsible operation of vessels around marine wildlife.
The Minister for Tourism Adrian Earnshaw MHK added: “Vision 2020, the Department of Tourism & Leisure’s proposed tourism strategy recognises the value of the natural environment and the need to actively protect, support and promote its sustainability in coming years.
Our coastline and countryside are major attractions for visitors thinking of coming to the Isle of Man, as well as contributing enormously to residents’ quality of life.”
The workshop will take place on Tuesday 24th June at 7.30pm at Knockaloe Farm classroom on Main Road, Patrick. If you would like any more information then please ring the Fisheries Division on 685857.
